Paper Anniversary

I’ve been struggling with what to get my husband for our first anniversary. The inspiration is paper and although I’ve seen ideas from tickets, to star dedications, those just weren’t lighting my fire. I had an a-ha moment when I woke up yesterday and I’m excited to put it together!

I’m going to attempt to construct the family crest for our (my new) last name. It seems fairly straightforward and I really like the meanings of the symbols used. I may include them on the back, along with a hand-written message for my honey.

Coat of Arms: Blue shield with a fesse between three leopard’s faces.

blue: valiant and hardy warrior who enterprises hazardous things by force and courage

fesse: military belt or girdle of honour; represents readiness to serve the public

leopard faces: truth and loyalty

I saw this crest associated with our name on 2 different sites, although as I kept digging I found more contenders.

There are many different spelling variations of our last name, and from the history I’ve read the first variation recorded in America is from Virginia, and that crest looks like this:

Hmm”¦ obviously very different crests. Don’t mind the flourish surrounding the shield.

And one more, from another spelling and a new design entirely:

Well crap. This crest is from an Irish background, while the first two are of English origin. So I decided that I get to pick which one I like best since our anniversary is in one week and I’m not likely to find a definitive answer to which one is the “right” one.

I think I’m going with the blue one. I love the description of its contents and I don’t feel a strong connection to look for the meanings of the other two. I’ll keep you posted on how it turns out!

What are you planning on getting your honey for your paper anniversary?
